Xush Kelibsiz! Добро пожаловать! Welcome!

Welcome to Multilingual Moments Blog at TIS!

This blog aims to highlight and share the successful multilingual moments at Tashkent International School in Uzbekistan.

Through sharing about our success stories we hope to continue fostering tolerance and respect towards other cultures and languages of the world, as well as encourage and empower all the teachers and learners to continue supporting multilingualism.

What is multilingualism and why encourage it?
"To be fluent in two or more languages is an individual and social resource", says the expert on bilingualism Leist-Villis. "The more languages a child speaks, the more means of access to different countries are open to him."

Encouraging multilingualism means to promote the learning of more languages at the same time, and not at the expense of the first language (also referred as home language, mother tongue). This is in line with numerous research evidence, also showing that being able to communicate in different languages on a regular basis brings both linguistic and cognitive benefits to children.

At TIS we are an international, multicultural, multilingual community. We believe that fostering and encouraging multilingualism is much more than speaking other languages; it is also understanding the languages of Music, Art, Technology, as well as the sign language, gestures (non-verbal communication) and even the language of emojis and abbreviations.

Through understanding other languages we develop respect and appreciation to other cultures and nations, as well as increased appreciation towards our own, which helps us embrace our identity and find our place in the world.

With all these benefits in mind, we are committed to maintaining home languages, developing love and enthusiasm towards other languages, as well as sharing our success stories.

We hope you can learn from our wonderful experiences, and leave your comments, which we will greatly appreciate.

Here we go!

Enjoy,
TIS Owls
